Looking towards summer, Part 2!

Summer break begins soon – well, in three and a half months – but that time will fly by sooner than you think! What have you planned for this summer?

If you haven’t already done so, talk to your parents about summer plans. It’s important to consider budget and location. It can be a wonderful opportunity for you by staying in Manila over the summer and pursuing an internship, shadowing or helping parents at work, volunteering for a community organization, visiting another province, or trying out a new skill (tennis? French lessons? dance?).

However, if it is possible to travel outside of the Philippines, consider established summer programs. Several CISM students will be traveling to Beijing this summer to develop their language skills or have already found internships while visiting family abroad. One of my favorite sites for researching summer options all over the world is Summer Omnibus, created and compiled by another international school counselor. Here’s the link:

We also recently had visitors from Fulford Academy, a private boarding school in Canada, and Oxbridge Summer Programs, both of whom shared some of their summer offerings. Oxbridge has programs in a variety of subjects that are taught at the University of Oxford and University of Cambridge in the UK, with additional course options in New York, France, and Spain. One of our own CISM students studied Molecular Biology and Drama last summer in Cambridge, and there are programs for rising Grade 8-12 students! For more information on Oxbridge, visit http://www.oxbridgeprograms.com/index.php

Fulford Academy, who visited during our Study in Canada Fair at CISM, shared information about their Grade 9 and 10 math/science/English programs that offer a Ministry of Education in Ontario transcript after successful completion. For more information, visit http://www.FulfordAcademy.com .

University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, BC, Canada also offers a two week Summer Scholars Program. More information in my office or visit http://www.summerprogram.isi.ubc.ca/

There are hundreds of summer opportunities around the world. Just a little research will help you find something exciting!

Looking towards summer, Part 1!

Although we are in the midst of the holiday season, it is not too early to start considering summer options. For high school students, it is an opportunity to spend more time on activities that you love, develop your skills and talents or explore new ones, and perhaps even travel to visit potential college or university homes.

CISM is coordinating Chinese Language Camp in Beijing for next summer that you may be interested. Students should check with their Chinese teachers or the Main Office for more information, but space is filling fast. Check back here soon, too, for info on more summer programs offered by independent organizers or institutions.

For current Grade 10 and 11 students considering university study abroad, consider organized tours to visit schools that may interest you! A visit to a school can transform you – teaching you more about what the university might be like for you and giving you a tangible experience to better understand what is important to YOU when considering universities and colleges. Mr. Trevor Sturgeon, an experienced University Counselor at Singapore American School, recently visited us to share information about the different tours offered in the United States by TS College Tours. Here’s the website link for more information and how to sign up: www.tscollegetours.com
