Around the World in 180 Words | UN Day 2017

A Dragon Chronicles special feature

Besides being a dedication to the goals and accomplishments of the United Nations, UN Day is a celebration of the several cultures that share the Earth. It serves as a reminder of our social responsibility to pursue unity in order to achieve peace and harmony across all nations. This is a monumental task, and here at CISM, we ensure that our UN Day festivities are just as grand.
In celebration of UN Day 2017, Dragon Chronicles proudly presents you with our special UN Day tradition, Around the World in 180 Words! This year, we asked a few members of our culturally-diverse student body to give us a virtual tour of their favourite places in their home countries. We hope you’re ready, because you’re in for one exciting international adventure!

If we were to go to your home country, where is the first place you would take us and why?

Philippines – Max G.

The cool summer breeze shifting past palm trees, stretching upwards to the sky, azure waves gently ebbing away and coral-stained coastlines. All these describe the quintessential beach, a hideaway to relax the nerves. However, all this and more can be said of my most favorite place in the Philippines, my home country, and El Nido, Palawan. Setting aside an atmosphere of constant energy to a much slower, laid-back beach setting, a stark contrast to the popular Boracay island, El Nido is the perfect getaway. The beachside is surrounded by towering limestone cliffs, piercing through the crystal clear waters, jagged and tall, touching the sky with fingertips of rock. This ethereal archipelago is one of only two of its like, the other in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, a much more crowded, popular destination, bringing with popularity its many drawbacks. Water sports and diving are all accessible, if not highly encouraged in this sheltered paradise, bringing the essence of thrill and adventure to the otherwise peaceful landscape, in accordance with all walks of life. The gentle but fragrant waft of Filipino dishes would only bring in the most doubtful, with its sweet and sour spices. El Nido, Palawan has all things for every type of person, balancing this precarious scale with its sheer beauty and diversity. Setting itself apart from many other beaches that would contend, El Nido would undoubtedly be the first place anyone visiting the Philippines should enjoy.

 Philippines – Brizza M.

If you’d go to my home country which is the Philippines, I’d most likely take you to my favorite cupcake bakery, Vanilla. Vanilla is a cupcake bakery decorated with colorful walls and colorful furniture. Pastries are delish and they have the right amount of sugar! Unlike some bakeries, Vanilla’s decorations are very pleasing to the eye.

The first time I went to Vanilla was on my birthday, I was dying to go there since I saw it. I went with my family and we got 2 dozens cupcakes! The first ever cupcake I tried was the cookies and cream cupcake and I’m happy I chose that as my first! My top three choices are the cookies and cream, cotton candy, and red velvet.

The reason why I chose Vanilla instead of all the other thousands of destinations is because you can only find Vanilla in the Philippines and their cupcakes are amazing! Vanilla can give anyone a positive attitude and if you start your trip positively you might as well have a positive trip!

In my opinion, Vanilla is a “Must See” here in Manila. Their food and furniture are well presented and their staff are usually friendly. Even if you don’t like cupcakes, there are other yummy treats you can enjoy! If I could, I’d love to visit Vanilla again!

 Philippines – Alexa L.

If you come to my home country, I would take you to Mindanao. Mindanao and other parts of the Philippines have our national bird, the Philippine Eagle! Mindanao is also said to have the most Philippine Eagles. I want others to see these birds in their natural habitat, not in cages as pets! They really shouldn’t be there, because it’s wrong! We humans should leave these birds alone, but still love them for who they are as animals! Just because they are our national birds doesn’t mean that we can capture them and keep them in cages. They have the right to stay wherever they want; we shouldn’t be holding them back! If I take you there, I don’t just want you to understand the Philippine Eagle and its habitat, I want you to also raise your awareness of your surroundings! As it is the king of the Philippine rainforest, I want to keep it as safe, alive, and strong for as long as our civilization lives. I hope that taking you to Mindanao will help you to appreciate these birds and see that they are worth our protection.

Belgium – Emilie T.

If I had some friends that would visit Belgium I would directly send them to the Grand Place of Brussels. It is so beautiful that it looks as if you were in the times of castles, kings, and queens. All of the houses are decorated with gold. “L’Hôtel de Ville” (The Town Hotel) was built from 1405-1455. The top is 96 meters high and there are statues on each window.

On the top we can see St. Michel fighting the dragon which is the symbol of the city. All the buildings around the place represent a corporation: the millers have the buildings with the windmill decoration, the boatmen have the symbol of a boat in front of the house, but strangely the corporation of butchers has a swan symbol.

Not far from the Grand-Place there is a small statue named Manneken Pis. One of the legends says that a little boy peed on a starting fire and saved the city.

 India – Pranay S.

If I had to take somebody to anywhere in India, I would probably bring them to the Taj Mahal. This is because it is arguably the most iconic place in India. The Taj Mahal is located in a small city called Agra, which is part of a state called Uttar Pradesh, and it sits on the banks of the River Yamuna. The Taj Mahal is completely made of white marble, and has beautiful stone work. I would also bring that somebody here because it really embodies the culture that we have in India. It also has good dining options that are close to it. The Taj Mahal epitomises love. Another cool thing about the Taj Mahal is that it looks different during different times of day. The Taj Mahal also has a bit of story behind it. A Mughal emperor named Shah Jahan had a wife, who died. The wife’s name was Mumtaz Mahal. So the coolest part is that the Taj Mahal was a tomb for Mumtaz Mahal, and it took 20 years to build.

South Korea – Jae In K.

(I got help from Google Translate since I was raised in the Philippines and never got to learn Korean.) [It's okay, Jae In! A for effort! - DC]

If you did go to my home country, I’d take you to Haeundae, Busan. Busan is located in South Korea, my hometown. Haeundae is a beautiful part of Busan I really appreciate mostly because I get to reunite with the rest of my family there. See, I only get to visit my family once a year and my entire family gathers up in Haeundae just to visit me and my mom. Haeundae is also one of Busan’s top attractions because of the beach and beautiful city lights. The beach holds a few memories I can remember, like when I chased seagulls with my two cousins or when we covered our uncle with sand. Other than that, The beach is a regular old beach. There isn’t anything unique to it, but the only reason for taking you to Haeundae is mainly because of family and friends; I’d love for you to meet them. I treasure my moments with my family and I couldn’t ask for a better one. I hope next time I visit, I’ll be able to make more memorable moments and travel to more places there.
