I’d like to welcome you to our Financial Literacy class! It is an exciting initiative at CISM this SY2014-2015. I expect that most concepts will be new to the students. As we set out our initial roadmap, unit plans will not be segregated by grade level, but rather by difficulty and spiraled by the students’ capacities. A sequence of progression on the same unit, for instance, would reflect the following stages: remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing then ultimately, creating.
We will be guided by the National Standards in K-12 Personal Finance Education encompassing Financial Responsibility & Decision Making, Income & Careers, Planning & Money Management, Credit and Debt, Risk Management and Insurance, and Saving & Investing. Selected standards in Economics as outlined by the Council for Economic Education such as Money, Interest Rates, Scarcity, Decision Making & Entrepreneurship, will likewise be weaved into our curriculum. Our goal is to develop knowledge and skills to effectively manage one’s financial resources for a lifetime of financial security and stability.
I recognize that the way students are learning is fundamentally changing. Our classroom is a unique learning environment designed to stimulate, engage and inspire the students. Our transformative learning space is enhanced by information technology capabilities and each student is encouraged to bring his/her iPhone, iPad or laptop. If he/she does not have one, there are school iPads provided for sharing.
Our journey will be collaborative, participatory, authentic experiential, and student-centered. I expect that our learning, technology, space and pedagogy may evolve as the year unravels based on the students’ interest, skills and talents.
The guidelines in my class are simple:
- Be honest;
- Be respectful;
- Bring your passion to the classroom;
- Accept that you will make mistakes. It’s ok. We learn from them.
