Course Overview                   

The Chinese curriculum in Grades 4 and 5 continues to develop student acquisition of the Chinese language and nurture awareness and understanding of Chinese traditions and customs.  Students will be introduced to the building blocks of learning the language and continue to develop their communication skills in preparation for the Youth Chinese Test (YCT). All three levels are designed to develop in students a working competency in reading, writing, and communicating orally in Chinese.

 

Course Objectives

The Grades 4 and 5 Chinese program in Chinese International School Manila is designed to develop in students the following competencies in the Chinese language:

  1. Communicate effectively in a variety of situations and for multiple purposes using Chinese language
  2. Interact with cultural competence and understanding
  3. Connect with other disciplines and acquire information and diverse perspectives in order to use the language to function in academic and career-related situations
  4. Develop insight into the nature of language and culture in order to interact with cultural competence
  5. Communicate and interact with cultural competence in order to participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world

 

For Mandarin Chinese, student performance in each component will be assessed using rubrics that will be discussed with students prior to the assignment of tasks.  These rubrics will provide feedback to students in the four areas of communication focused on in the course: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

Assessment Framework(For Grade 5 students only)

Chinese International School Manila employs the following breakdown of assessment components:

20%     Formative assessment (quizzes, classroom drills and activities)

50%     Summative assessment (unit-end tasks)

30%     Final assessment (semester-end cumulative assessment tasks)
