#CISMakersFest2: Celebrating Creativity

This year’s Makers’ Fest and Scratch Day was a display of students’ creativity and ingenuity. The day started off with a student assembly that featured the best Genius Hour projects of the year.  It was unique a experience for everyone, listening to students share how they learned about their passion.

Opening of the exhibit of students’ creations followed shortly. Creations ranged from Scratch games and interactive stories to originally designed robot explorers. At the end of the day, students gathered again at the MPH for the awarding ceremony.

Makers Fest Year 2

As the year comes to a close, the students prepare to show off their final creations in class. In this season’s Makers’ Fest and Scratch Day, scheduled on May 26th, Tuesday,  students take on solving real-world problems using technology applications. Gr. 6-7 students research and create solutions for the  TRASH TREK Challenge of the FIRST Lego League Competition. The challenge asks students to choose and solve a  problem related to trash: “collection, to sorting, to smart production and reuse.”

Grades 8-10 will showcase the robot creations following the theme and guidelines for the Open Category competition of the World Robot Olympiad.  The theme “Robot Explorers” asks students to design and build robots which are capable of exploring natural resources in potentially hazardous environments. The robots should be able to demonstrate its features and capabilities through a simulated environment designed by the students also.

Grades 4-5 will also display their interactive stories and games using Scratch program and Makey Makey.

To prepare students for the real competition in the next school year, there will be judges who will be grading their works.  Awards like Maker of The Year, Best in Simulation, Most Innovative Solution, People’s Choice, Robot of the Year, best Book Adaptation, Best Game Maker will be given to deserving groups.

9:30 – 9:40 - Ribbon Cutting  (Gr. 4 – Gr. 10)
9:40 - 10.10 - 1st Run of Presentation/Demonstration for participants (Gr. 4 – Gr. 10)
10.10 – 10.30 - BREAK
10.30 – 11.20 - 2nd Run for Gr. 2 and Gr. 3
11.20 – 12.10 - 3rd Run for PreK – Gr. 1
12.10 – 12.50 - LUNCH
12.50 – 1.40 - Pack Up Booths
1.40 – 2.30 - Awarding at MPH  (Gr. 3-10)

The Starting Line

The Makey-Makey, invented by Jay Silver and Eric Rosenbaum, allows users to easily utilize the objects in their surrounding environment and discover various ways to turn boring household items into fun and exciting toys. As the ribbon was cut on May 16, 2014, this new and unique device was introduced to the students of Chinese International School Manila (CISM) during the school’s very first Makers’ Fest. During the fest, students from Grades 6 to 10, held activity booths where they displayed their original creation, each one powered by a single Makey-Makey kit.

For my group, our game was called, “Run 4 Fun,” a running game where two teams raced against each other while imitating a randomly given position on the screen in front of them. The positions change for each member of the team when the last runner reaches the end of the running platform and presses the buzzer. I was mesmerized when I saw such an abundance of eager children waiting in line to play our game. I have never guessed that Run 4 Fun would have been such a success and that there were children who would be running back to our booth requesting to play over and over again, even when we had ran out of prizes to give away. In the beginning of the fest, I was worried that not many people would approach our booth. However, who knew that Run 4 Fun would have accumulated the most customers out of all the games!

Taking into consideration the fact that our school is the first to use the Makey Makey in the Philippines,  I hope for CISM to become the starting line for introducing Makey Makeys to other schools throughout the country. If people are able to learn about the wonderful qualities of the Makey Makey and of the many opportunities in technology it possesses for future creations, then more people will want to get their hands on one. The Makey Makey is not just a piece of metal; it is a channel for people to show that they do not need to be tech savvy to be able to create something unique. It is an inspiration to others, to remind them that with a bit of imagination, they have the power to make life just a little more fun for everyone.
