January 30th marked the children’s 100th day in school. Since the first day of school, children have been anticipating this day as it is a milestone that gives them a sense of accomplishment and achievement. Once they look back to their first day, they see that they are now smarter, wiser, and brighter.
The Nursery, together with the Pre-Kinder and Kindergarten classes had an eventful celebration on their 100th day in school. This celebration also paved way to learning different concepts while having fun.
Their day started by coming to school in their 100 year old self. We talked about how they would look like 100 years from now. They were able to distinguish how old and young people look like. They even mentioned how they would look like their grandparents when they are 100 years old.
We gathered all together and had a parachute activity with the other Early Year children. Here the children were able to identify patterns as they were asked to line up following the girl-boy-girl-boy pattern. This activity was not just about playing with the parachute but following instructions and movement exercise as well.
We also prepared different Stations for them to go around to. We started making our 100 Days Hat. We colored and used sequins to decorate our hats.
The children enjoyed playing Sort 100 Fruits and Shake the Bottle (with 100 pompoms) game. After the games they also danced to their favorite tunes.
To incorporate Digital Literacy, we had a station where they were shown how green screen looked like. Their pictures were then used to create their 100 Days key chain.
They were also taught how to say 100 days in Chinese (Yībǎi Tiān). They were shown how to write in Chinese characters and they also painted their 100 Days Card in Chinese characters.
To end our celebration, the children were given their 100 Days badge.
It was a simple celebration but it was truly memorable for the children as we prepared activities they they loved doing while also learning from the activities.
The children have gotten to a great start of the school year as they adjust to our classroom routines and get to know their friends in school. As we end the First Quarter, let me share with you what the Nursery kids have been learning.
In ELA, the children are learning more about books. They learned the different parts of a book and how to properly handle a book. Even though they are not readers, they are able to use their imagination and tell their stories about the pictures they see in books when we have Reading Centers.
Every week we learn a new letter; how it sounds, words beginning in the letter, as well as the proper way of tracing/writing the letters. During our Center Time activities, children are able to practice and learn more about the letter for the week. They enjoy making crafts on every letter, as well have practice their creativity and art skills. Center Time activities help them recall and recognize the letter using different materials.
We also have read alouds during Math; the stories read introduce the topic for the week. This quarter we focused on counting and recognizing numerals. Each week, we discuss a new number for them to be able to understand the concept of numbers and help them practice counting. We use different materials for them to practice counting, such as animal counters, counting sticks, clay, and unifix cubes. We utilize different manipulative and materials during Center Time to ensure that the children are having fun, as well as learning.
In Social Studies and Science, we are learning more about ourselves and as well as the children around us.
For science, we are exploring the different parts of our body and what we can do to take care of our body. We discussed about how each part of our body function and discovered how our senses function. We had a smelling activity and tried to guess the different items on the cup. We also identified which one smells good and bad.
In our discussion about the sense of touch, the topic was integrated with Social Studies. We talked about “Then and Now” where we discussed how we have changed from babies to big girls and boys.
Then we had an activity to explore our sense of touch. We crawled like babies and used our hands to touch and feel the textured floor. Then we used our feet, just like big girls and boys, and walked on the textured floor. We also added paint and had a footprint mural, and cold water to wash off the paint.
These are only a few of the activities that we have done in class, and we’re looking forward to more exciting and fun learning experience with these bunch. It was truly an amazing start of the school year.
February 8, 2017 was a special day for our students; it was the day that marked their 100 days of going to school. This being said, they are now 100 days smarter and wiser. Since their first day of school, students are anticipating this event gives them a sense of accomplishment and achievement.
We celebrated this event with the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten. We had different activities that also further develop their skills in the different subjects. The students also came in with 100 things on their shirts.
We started the day with a Parachute exercise with Coach Vance.
After the movement activity, we welcomed our special guest, Ms. Rica. She read the children a story.
For snacks, the whole Early Years had a picnic in the playground. The students were able to mingle with other kids from the different levels.
After our snacks, we prepared Center Activities which incorporates skills from different Core Subjects.
We decorated a fan with has 100 written in Chinese. The children also learned the word and how to write it in Chinese.
We listen to the story: The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. They talked about how people would look like when they are 100 years old. They also predicted on how a tree would look like after 100 years. Then they made a tree mural on how their tree would like in 100 years.
On our last center, the students decorated their 100 Days hat.
To end the celebration, students were awarded with their 100 Days badge.
Learning Math or numbers can be a bit intimidating for little humans. That’s why in Nursery, we use different strategies in teaching them the concepts in Math.
We begin the class with some number videos and songs that the kids can sing and dance to. This way, they learn and recognize numerals from what they see in the videos and rote counting from the songs.
The children also enjoyed listening to Number Stories. The stories paved way as we touch on the concept of each numeral.
Kids learn in different ways; The use of concrete materials such as blocks, unifix cubes, toys eggs, and counters show meaning to each number.
We incorporate our topics in Math to different games such as number hop, number fishing, number bingo, and number find.
During Center Time, we use Manipulative such as number insets, number cards, clip cards, number puzzles and counters. We even use iPads in some of our Centers for ordering and matching numbers. We also use clay to practice forming numbers as it also helps in their fine motor skills.
The kids were exposed to the concepts of Math by doing and discover. Through the various activities presented to them, they were are to learn and play at the same time.
The week before the Easter Break, the School also had their simple Easter Celebration by having an Easter Egg Hunt. For the Nursery class, we had our own take of celebrating Easter through incorporating it in our activities in class.
In anticipation of the Easter Egg Hunt, we had activities in Math related to the celebration. With our topic on identifying which set has More or Less, we had centers and circle time activities prepared for the children to enjoy and learn from.
The children were given two toy eggs which had different number of counters in them. They practiced More or Less by identifying which egg has more or less inside.
Their Buddy Work activity also include using toy eggs and counters. They prepared and placed different number of counters inside the eggs and their buddies were the ones to identify which one had More or Less.
Our work time also includes bunnies and eggs; having them count the pictures and practice writing the numbers on their own. They colored pictures of the group that had more.
Our week ended with an Easter Egg Hunt. They had fun finding eggs and counting the surprise inside their eggs.
