Learning about different cultures gives us a better understanding of people around us. In Grade 2, Social Studies follows Project American Education Reaches Out (Project AERO) Standards and focuses on the theme “My Global Community.” This quarter, children get to know one another even more by discovering a little bit about the geography, meeting and dining etiquette, and science and technology of each home country represented in class. Moreover, they learn about the flag, traditional costume, festival and/or folktale. One of their favorite activities is tasting a dessert or drink from the different countries.
Other activities include research work, role-playing, reflection-writing, singing or dancing, doing arts and crafts, and/or playing games. These experiences help children see how different people are, and at the same time, realize how similar they can also be in terms of ideas and interests. In addition, they get to know themselves more and feel proud to be citizens of their respective countries.
