Grade 11 Mandarin ab initio students started learning daily routine vocabulary words, and conjunction words related to the topic. Students describe their daily activities by applying the learned words in sentences and sharing their experiences during class discussion.

Active learning is “anything that involves students in doing things and thinking about the things they are doing” (Bonwell & Eison, 1991).
Grade 9/10 Mandarin Foundation students construct their own sentences using simple and complex conjunctions. They apply the concept they learned in writing skills. Immediate teacher feedback on students’ work and peer-assessment were helpful process in the process of their learning language.
In active learning, students were given the opportunity to think, talk and process the concept and course materials.
We also allow students to practice important skills of collaboration. Grade 9/10 students work together to form words/phrases.
